Der andere Prozeß Kafkas Briefe an Felice Kafka's Other Trial The Letters to Felice Notes A thoroughly enjoyable read and look into the secret life of Franz Kafka His inspiration for The Metamorphosis and The Trial among others The study was so well written that I now have ordered the only novel by Canetti I found this book in which Elias Canetti uses the over 500 surviving letters that Franz Kafka wrote to Felice Bauer to tell the story of their exasperating romance to be tremendously entertaining Canetti demonstrates enormous skills His narrative is dynamic and his description of Kafka's tortured personality is sublime Not having read the letters I feel am unable to comment on either Canetti's scholarship or his fidelity to his source material The problem is that whenever one looks at the personal lives of writers painters or other artists we find ourselves confronted by their defect as humans which undermines our ability to appreciate the greatness of their work As Maurice Minnifield a character in the American television series Northern Exposure once observed the effect of the exercise is to drag our heroes down to our own level This is certainly what happens when one reads Kafka's Other Trial The great writer comes across as a very abject human beingThis novel was certainly fun to read but I fear that it told me that I wanted to know about its subject A person who thinks that he is empowered to separate his inner world from the outer one has no inner world from which something might be separable p65 I enjoyed reading this because of the many literal uotes from the letters A brief look into the mind of Kafka and got excited to read Metamorphosis sometimes a bit too slow and boring to my taste A beautiful and sensitive account of Kafka's inner life as revealed through his letters to his fiancé Canetti takes on the burden of truly understanding Kafka as both a writer and a human being Pretty much the only chance you'll get to be moved by literary criticism Felice Bauer was Kafka's first great love and the inspiration for his first great fiction Six weeks after they met he wrote The Judgment for her in one night of feverish activity Kafka always inferred to the traumatic public breaking off of their engagement as his tribunal and indeed he began work on The Trial within a month of that eventKafka's letters to Felice offer rare insights into the writer's life and art Elias Canetti's brilliant and sensitive examination of this moving correspondence to shows is the origins of Kafka's voice as a writer and his torment as a man One of my favourite reads Canetti captures Kafka exuisitely A wonderful essay written using Kafka's own letters about the two women in his life and the public trial by his own fiancee that became a source of deeply rooted humiliation Canetti chronicles the letters written to Felice Bauer by Kafka and does an excellent study on the man He raises points about Kafka's own self doubts and reservation towards commitment even commentating on his desire to be small so that nothing will think to pray upon him Evidence of this is present even in the way Kafka shortens his own name to a single letter This is a man who wants to be invisible because he doesn't feel he is worthy of being seen or capable of living a bourgeoise life the way that others can He is trapped and any attempt to bring him out into the open is met with fraught aversion and descent and when he begins to relent to such pressures of commitment by Felice his situation and mental state declines even further Kafka is a fascinating study into the complexities of the human condition and one man's struggle to be free of power struggles for he himself felt too weak to challenge others Canetti's book helps shed light on what made the man such a uniue author and whose prose seems as ageless today as it did in his lifetime I read it as an introduction to Letters to Felice Decided not to read the Letters to Felice cause Elias Canetti says it involves a lot of Kafka's complaints to Felice so yah not really in the moodBut this essay is good v good explains Kafka's inspirations etc and Felice's influence
