alone It featured characters that were in the previous book Appalachian Prey I will certainly be reading it soon I really liked how the romance was woven into this story It didn t feel unnatural like some books that make you think it couldn t happen while on a serious case It wassubtle and didn t feel rushed I love this author s writing style 2.5 stars rounded up to 3, because it s readable, and better than many Intrigues, but a definite disappointment considering that the previous book Appalachian Prey was so good This has Charlotte I Can Do It Myself Helms arriving at Mount Lavender in belief that a sex trafficking ring is in operation there This sees her teaming up with new deputy James I Don t Want To Talk About It Tedder brother of Lilah from the previous book The mission is personal for Charlotte, as one of the victims 2.5 stars rounded up to 3, because it s readable, and better than many Intrigues, but a definite disappointment considering that the previous book James I Don t Want To Talk About It Tedder brother of Lilah from the previous book The mission is personal for Charlotte, as one of the victims is the daughter of her best friend. There are a few tropes in romance I don t like, and I seem to keep findingOne I ve noticed a couple of times is the heroine who is fiercely determined to be independent and self sufficient So whenever anybody tries to help her usually the hero , she always responds with I can do it myself or I don t need your help Now, independence is all well and good, and you should be able to look after yourself, but I can t help but feel when you keep on giving out statements like that, time after time, you move from independent to ungrateful That was definitely the case with Charlotte here, and it got a little exasperating James was a solid hero He s a war vet and suffering PTSD Often, I have difficulty with PTSD heroes in romance as much as I admire veterans and have utmost sympathy for PTSD sufferers , because that often becomes the focus of the story and it can be an exhaustive headspace to be in Here, the PTSD angle only serves to inform his character and how he reacts in certain situations, which I was grateful for Unfortunately, the plot wasn t great shakes After the great mystery and suspense of the previous book, this was pretty straightforward and, well.flat There s a sex trafficking ring, we know from the git go who is behind it, and it often feels like a case of treading water until the wave hits Events are padded out with the arrest of some ginseng poachers and a domestic dispute I mean, really This is a romantic suspense dealing with human sex trafficking No budgetary considerations In a book, your only limit is your imagination So it s disappointing this failed to do much interesting with its gritty subject matter And makes me think this line isn t the appropriate one for human sex trafficking stories.Curiously, this book seems to take place a good year or so after the previous one despite being published just a month later Lilah was pregnant in that one, but here she s had her child The child is referred to as a baby, but at one stage says, See the fire, Uncle Jim Bob So is it a baby or a 5 year old Once again, I enjoyed the setting Always good to take a step outside Texas and Colorado in these books once in a while But the book never took the opportunities it should have considering its subject matter, and concerned itself with too much extraneous material that didn t have much to do with the real story And I could have gone without that minor character who has the sight Emotionally gripping, sweetly thrilling, action packed, sexy romantic adventure filled with danger, mystery and two people forced to trust each other to survive Detective Charlotte Helms is a strong, dedicated and on the trail of a human trafficking ring when her best friends daughter is taken The cabin in the Appalachian mountains she is staying at broke into ends up belonging really loved Appalachian Prey, but this is even better, and while characters from the previous book are featured, APPALACHIAN ABDUCTION stands firmly on its own Charlotte and James are fabulous characters, and what I appreciated the most is that they are believable all the way, as people and as police officers I loved that there weren t long lasting misunderstandings, and their chemistry was palpable from the start theirs was a slow burn that was perfectly integrated to the suspense, and you feel that when it happens, that they are good for the long run Debbie Herbert has an innate sense of pacing that made this book a pleasure to read the pace is nice and steady throughout with perfectly timed explosive bursts of action The romance takes place in a realistic timeframe, and the romantic moments happen at the right place and the right time There were a few fabulous little details, such as Charlotte s first uniform and the dye job that are not crucial to the plot, although they do serve a purpose they were absolutely delightful and enhanced the story There was also a very clever plot twist that involved something that I never knew was illegal And now I must come to what really, really wowed me Debbie Herbert s writing The descriptions are vivid, the fights are very creatively crafted, the characters exceptionally well defined, the dialogues are excellent and adapted to the characters personalities, and the prose is amazingly smooth, eloquent, and wonderfully smooth Ms Herbert s writing is subtly elegant, vibrant and dynamic, and all this gorgeousness never distracts from the tightly plotted story A most excellent book I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book All thoughts and opinions are my own
