Echoes of Love 21st Century Austen #5 An up to date modern interpretation of one of my favourite Jane Austen novels Persuasion Felix Wentworth is back from fighting in Afghanistan Anna is still in love with him Can they overcome the issues which initially pulled them apart and finally find happiness together?A fantastic book Rosie Rushton has captured the essence and spirit of Austen's classic but also added her own spin Austen for the 21st century I was feeling pretty guilty about rereading during break and I went on a Reserves binge where you reserve 15 books at a time and they all come in at once and you only read half happen to anyone else? And don’t tell me about pausing I can’t ever figure it out Well luckily this book did arrive in time and it was lovely 3 12 stars As I have mentioned once or twice I love modern Jane Austen I noticed this Rushton lady has uite a series with sadly cheesy titles and covers so I figured I would give the Persuasion version a go Good adaptation of the Dad as a reality star and Wentworth as a Marine I also liked the Mom as an extra character although the sister going to live with her boyfriends family was tougher to sell Overall though a lovely time and when I’m in a lurch I will definitely find the other Rushtons for fun fluff Let me start by saying that Persuasion is my favourite Austen novel and when I found out that my library's Overdrive collection includes a modern day adaptation of the story I immediately included it in my wish list The best part about Persuasion is its focus on second chances at love and the maturity of its characters Anne has to overcome her sense of duty and reach out towards what she really wants while Captain Wentworth has to understand the circumstances under which she made her decision all those years ago and learn to forgive her That said perhaps it is unfair to compare Echoes of Love in my opinion to one of the most enduring love stories ever written But when an author is writing an adaptation of a classic comparisons are inevitable While Austen's story endures it is also woefully behind in terms of representation This is where Echoes of Love triumphs It's portrayal of a POC protagonist in Wentworth and by extension his family and a person with a disability in Shannon Smith enables the story to be modern and inclusive than the original However the author spent so much time describing Anna and Felix's first turn at a relationship and the ensuing fall out in so much detail that it takes up nearly 75% of the book What I wanted to read was how they'd find their way back to each other what would lead them there and if possible a new insight into their psyche Not many authors can succeed at this and I can only think of one PD James's seuel to Pride and Prejudice Death Comes to PemberleyI would recommend this story for YA readers as an introduction to Austen's story Read Echoes of Love and if you like it read Persuasion which I think has the best love letter in the entire English literary canon I really like this book no I love it I've just read the original ' Persuasion' before reading this one as it is adapted from it You know I just wanted to know the real story before I read the adaption and usually people say that the original is a lot better Well in this case it is not true This was a lot interesting and a lot romantic Anna is definitally in love and Felix is one of the sweetest guys I've ever read in a book and he was in love too so it just made the perfect story To be honest I did look for similarities between Echoes of Love and Persuasion and there were many but there were many differences too obviously as Echoes of Love is set in the 21st century so it was bound to be differnt in many ways such there is no heir who inherits the estate and there is no such thing as beneicial marriage at a young age without being in love no there isn't even a relationship without two people being in love or fancying one and another and so on and so onBut I was satisfied with the whole story even though Anna and Felix didn't meet again until the 165th page which is way over the middle of the book However I was informed of their relationship before they broke up and that was very romantic tooSo these two were my favourite scenes;Sence numebr #1;'This much better' Hugo repeated In an instant he had spun her round to face him and was kissing her hungrily on the lips It took Anna by suprise but for a moment she responded telling herself that maybe this was the way to get Felix out of her head and her heart once and for all since single or not he clearly had not time for her 'Hugo no she gasped'Come off it' he muttered 'You know you want' As his hand moved lower she stamped on his foot with her heel and turned and runAs she pushed open the front door she saw a letter lying on the doormat The writing on the envelope was unmistakable it was from Felix She was ripping it open when her mobile beeped wih a text message That too was from Felix Forget what I said in the letter You've obviously found someone elseHer heart racing she started to read Hi I can't stand this any longer I'm due back at my unit in ten days when my physio's finished and who knows where they'll send me? I love you AnnaAnna gasped out loud and then glanced back at the message on the mobile still in her hand I never stopped loving you the letter went on Even when I was angry about all that stuff with your dad and you I never stoped loving you I tried to I even tried to fancy Louisa but nice as she is it was always you that I thought about And then that day when you turned up at Charlie's place and fell on your face that's when I knew I still wanted you Please say we can try again? Please? There was no stamp on the letter It had been hand delivered Which meant Felix had been here Could he have seen her and Hugo? Outside? Just now?She grabbed her mobile You've got it all wrong I love you u only u Where r u?She found him sitting staring disconsolately into a pint'Felix'He started and stared at her 'I don't want to hear it' he said standing up and trying to push past her'Felix listen' she urged 'You don't get it''Oh I get it' he said 'I saw it with my own eyes You and that jerk Hugo Kissing''Please you have to believe me I didn't want him to' she said 'He ''Come off it' Felix said 'Are you trying to tell me you gave him no encouragement at all? What do you think I am? Dumb?''OK OK please just let me say this and then well then it's up to you'He said nothing but he didn't move'OK for just a moment I thought that if I you know kissed him it might help me forget you Because I thought you didn't want me and that going out with someone else would help me move on But it didn't work because there is only one person I want to kiss and that's you''Say that again''The only person I want to kiss is you'Slowly very slowly Felix stretched out a hand and touched her cheek Eletric shocks rippled through Anna's body Slowly he wrapped his arms aound her and pulled her against him burrying his face in her hair and rocking her gently to and froScene numebr #2;'I wish this could go on for ever' she sighed rolling on to her back and running her hands through her long damp hair 'I don't want anything to change''But it will' Felix said 'And I worry that' He paused picking up a shell and turning it over and over in is hands'Worry about what?''What will happen when my training's over and we get deployed somewhere What if I get sent abroad? How will you be then?''If you mean will I give up on us you know the answer''I know it's just well I'm not stupid You've got to have a life and with me miles away and you off to uni next year meeting with loads of boys that it'll be easier for you to be with''Come on No one's easier to be with than you''You know what I mean Boys actually in the same place as you from the same background boys your family would approve of''I just want you no one else' Anna said 'I don't care what my family think So could you get that into your head once and for all?''I'She pushed him back on the sand and pressed her lips against his And for a long while neither of them said another word Persuasion is novel so close to my heart that I have vowed to be the expert on it and all adaptationsretellings that come with itThis is certainly one of the best I have seen while it is a teen novel even now I find it compelling and entertaining What I loved about this is it told the reader how Anne and Freddie got together and how their separation went they also made the reason that Freddie is home from the services very modern While I enjoyed a look into the past it did take up a lot of the story and left about half to the original itself Still I wouldn't skip over this part of the story when I reread it in the futureSomething I rate the retelling by is the ending and my god the ending was good here While nothing will ever compare to the original ending the letter still gives me goosebumps Rushton gave it her all and it really paid offI never really felt like anything was forced to be made modern nothing seemed out of place in this retelling This begs the uestion why has no one made this into a vlog series like Lizzie Bennet Diaries or made it into a modern day film like Clueless? I think this needs to happen since this book clearly shows it can be done and work extremely well Nice for very young adultstweensA good gentle way to interest tweens and very young adults in Persuasion The re visioning of Walter Eliot is particularly good The story line is loosely based on Persuation by Jane Austen There are some similarities and of course many differences For one the main characters are much younger also the setting is in the 21st century and the most important is that the time line covered only a number of months and not years as in the originalOverall the story line is very similar a girl meets a boy then breaks up with him after a pressure from her family meets him again and gets him backI found the characters a bit lacking not well developed I found Anna a bit anoying since I was expecting someone intelligent and reserved Maybe because of the young age of the characters I did not believe in their great love Something vital was missing in their story to make it realObviously this book was aimed at young girls The language used reflected that yet I hope that young adults who attend univerisities and colleges would show a bit intelligence especially in their spoken language this book was sooo sweet a really good ending this book was a modern classic take on the classic book 'persuassion' By Jane Austenit really retold the story well and Rosie but the modern day into this book cleverly this book has elements of lovepassion and regret inif you are looking for a nice summer read or you really just want a uite easy read this is defiantly your book i can't wait to read some of the other books rosie rushton has written as they are all modern classics of mostly Jane Austen books Anna is the daughter of Walter Elliot a washed up has been TV personality Walter has been out of work for over a year and has refused to curb his lifestyle which has caused major financial difficulties for the Elliot’s Family friend Marina has convinced Walter to move rent free into an apartment near the marina where he can “house sit” for her friends while a nice couple pays to rent out the family estate Marina begins telling Anna about the couple that is going to be renting out the house when Anna suddenly gets the feeling that she’s heard of them before Turns out the couple renting the house are the aunt and uncle of Felix Wentworth the love of Anna’s life All would be well with their being there except for the fact that Anna’s family came between her and Felix two years earlier tearing them apart Anna comes to learn that Felix is going to be visiting them for the summer while he is on leave from the military and sees that she might have a chance to win him back if she can prove her love and remorse Will she be able to convince him that there has never been anyone but him for her and that her family will never make her decisions for her again?Echoes of Love is the fifth book in the 21st Century Austen series by Rosie Rushton The series takes Jane Austen’s novels and turns them into contemporary teen romance stories with Echoes of Love being based on Persuasion Rushton is also well known for her other teen series The Leehampton Series Best Friends and What a Week Echoes of Love does a great job at making Persuasion relevant to the social issues of today I think it was an interesting twist to make Felix black and Anna white Bi racial relationships are still sometimes tough sells to some people and it was nice to see it accepted here And what a great twist to make Felix a soldier in Afghanistan So many people in today’s society are datingengagedmarried to a soldier and it was interesting to see it represented here The personal struggle Anna had with saying goodbye to him when he left for training and boot camp and her response when she found out that he had been injured were definitely relatable for many todayMy biggest complaint with the book would probably have been the Wentworth “you pierce my soul” letter It’s missing Anyone who has read Persuasion knows that the letter is the standout part of the novel I was all anticipation to find out whether or not Rushton was going to include it in her novel and when I finally got to it I was a bit let down I guess since it was a teen related book I shouldn’t have expected something as stunning and heartfelt as an adult’s love letter but I hoped anywayI’m a huge fan of turning Austen’s novels into ones geared towards teens Rushton does a great job at bringing Persuasion to a mature teen audience The book takes place in Europe where the drinking age is 18 so many of the characters meet at bars and drink wine and beers There are also some sexual innuendo’s made which might make some parents uncomfortable about their younger teens reading the book This young hip fresh take on Jane Austen’s Persuasion is sure to have the teen in your family clamoring for Austen’s originalsKimberly Reflections of a Book Addict Jesse Joy Echoes Of
